Re-Plaster and Fix It Program

Individual Beneficiary Initiative -

RE-PLASTER AND FIX IT PROGRAM

Earth Rising Foundation has initiated this program as a means of furthering our goals of promoting and using earthen materials.

This program is an ideal fit while we are overseas, and while we are working on our larger partner-based programs. Many local people come to our projects and ask for help in re-plastering and fixing up their current earthen homes of disrepair. Some are orphaned school children, some have jobs and aren't exactly sure how best to use the materials (i.e. what "mix" will last the longest), most are elderly, and all of them have a keen interest in learning more and improving their current living situation!

We usually take a day or two on the weekend from our other programs and try and lend a hand to these folks to get them started. The builders we hire are always very patient and kind to their peers and share in whatever advice they have, articulating some of the "do's" and "don'ts" of using the materials.

As is always the case, there never seems to be enough time, energy or money to go around to everyone, and there are always projects we want to do, but are unable. These projects are usually privately funded by non-African travelers we meet while in Africa, local businesses or concerned citizens of the areas we work, and even by those local people themselves who muster up enough to buy the materials. When the materials have arrived we have made every effort to donate our time (sometimes the local builders do this as well) on a weekend to teach and plaster what we can.

The average cost to re-plaster and fix up a small earthen home is minimal. $150 USD is enough to hire the builders for the day, buy lime and source needed sand and clay material, in addition to training homeowners in the steps they need to maintain the structure.
